Steve's interest in boating was as a consequence of having a love of Sea Fishing, which he grew up doing around the shores of Poole Harbour and the surrounding area. At the age of 16, Steve was introduced to boat fishing by the Poole Charter Skipper legend, Tony Way. From his very first trip aboard Tony's boat, "Two Ways" Steve decided to make becoming a charter skipper himself, his goal and set about saving the money to buy his first boat. Sadly, a hectic teenage social life meant that by the time Steve had reached 20 years of age, his boat fund had amassed a total of.....well, zero.
It was time to put Plan B into action and so Steve joined the Army in the hope that a reliable steady income would boost the Boat Buying Fund. Fast forward several years and Steve had completed a full military career, amassing 4,600 flying hours as a helicopter pilot. A year long break from the Army in 1989 saw Steve running his first charter boat from Poole, during which time he also gained many maritime qualifications. In 1999, Steve took up boating and sea fishing full-time and since then has run several boats, mostly called True Blue. Steve is a qualified RYA Yachtmaster Instructor and an Inland Waterways Instructor.

Steve is a Qualified Commercially Endorsed Yachtmaster Offshore, a Royal Yachting Association Yachtmaster Instructor and a licensed boatman on The Channel Island of Alderney.
During the London 2012 Olympic Games, Steve skippered the Controlling Vessel for the Windsurfing Events. As an angler, Steve has fished in various places around the world including Kenya, Spain, Florida, Norway, Thailand and The Shetland Isles. In 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023 True Blue, skippered by Steve was involved in The THUNNUS UK, Bluefin Tuna tagging project and in 2021, 2022 and 2023 also caught, tagged and released Bluefin Tuna under the UK's CHART Scheme. Under Steve's guidance five seasons of Bluefin Tuna fishing have seen 736 Atlantic Bluefin Tuna caught and released, with over 360 tags deployed. Mike has spent all his life in and around boats. As a youngster he was influenced by his Dad who successfully raced offshore powerboats. On leaving full-time education, Mike trained as a marine engineer before opting for the greater role of crewing on a commercial crab and lobster boat. This gave Mike more time at sea, a place where he feels at home and where he went on to qualify as a commercially endorsed skipper. He has been involved with the Recreational Bluefin Tuna fishery right from the start having participated in all three years of the CHART programme. 2025 will be Mike's fifth consecutive season of legal tuna fishing making him one of the most experienced bluefin skipper/crew in the UK. |
